A Place to Weave Each Day Like a Journey

TRAVELER'S FACTORY KYOTO

Founded on the concept of “Living Each Day Like a Journey,” TRAVELER’S FACTORY is the official store of TRAVELER’S COMPANY. The flagship store first opened in 2011 in Nakameguro, Tokyo, becoming a gathering place for fans from around the world. Centered around the well-loved TRAVELER’S notebook, which gains character over time, the store offers a wide range of stationery, accessories, and travel-inspired items to enrich your journey.

Following the opening of the Airport Store at Narita Airport in 2014 and the Station Store at Tokyo Station in 2017, the Kyoto Store was launched in 2020 at ShinPuhKan. The Kyoto location features exclusive items and popular stamps, attracting visitors who see it as a destination in itself. As a hub for TRAVELER’S notebook, the store continues to share its charm and inspire travelers every day.

“More Than Just Selling Products” – A Place That Tells a Story

At the heart of Kyoto, where history and modernity intertwine, stands ShinPuhKan at the Karasuma Oike intersection. With its retro-modern architecture, it watches over the city with quiet elegance. Inside, the iconic Ace Hotel, originally from Seattle, made its Asia debut, turning the space into a gathering spot for travelers from around the world.

Nestled on the first floor of ShinPuhKan, TRAVELER’S FACTORY Kyoto blends seamlessly into Kyoto’s unique landscape, where tradition meets contemporary culture. Designed for those who cherish the journey, this official store of TRAVELER’S notebook welcomes visitors with the warm scent of wood and leather. Shelves are lined with TRAVELER’S notebooks—crafted to gain character over time—alongside a curated selection of items that enrich the travel experience. But this is more than just a stationery store; it’s a space that invites people to embrace the idea of “living each day like a journey.”

Now, nearly four years since its opening, TRAVELER’S FACTORY Kyoto has become a beloved destination for fans from Japan and beyond. At the heart of it all is store manager Ms. Mizuguchi, who has been part of the journey from the very beginning. We sat down with her to talk about the charm of TRAVELER’S notebook, the heartfelt connections formed with customers, and the special moments that could only happen in Kyoto.

– Mizuguchi-san, I heard you originally started at a store in Tokyo.

Mizuguchi: Yes, I first started working at TRAVELER’S FACTORY Station in Tokyo Station in 2019. Before that, I was in a completely different line of work. When my contract at my previous job ended, I was at a crossroads, wondering what I wanted to do next. That’s when I happened to come across a job listing for TRAVELER’S FACTORY.

I’ve always loved carrying notebooks and writing things down by hand, but I wouldn’t say I was a stationery fanatic. For me, notebooks were more about being useful tools that fit naturally into my life. What really resonated with me in the job description was a line that said, “We’re looking for people who can share stories, not just sell products.” That struck a chord with me, and I knew right away—this was it. So, I applied.

My first assignment was at Station, but soon after joining, I heard about the opening of the Kyoto store. Since I’m originally from western Japan and spent my student years in the Kansai area, I decided to transfer there. The store was initially set to open in April 2020, but due to the pandemic, the launch was postponed to June. At first, there weren’t many tourists, and we had a relatively quiet start. But looking back, I think that turned out to be a good thing—it gave me the chance to personally greet and connect with each customer who came in.

– TRAVELER’S is a brand built around the theme of travel. It must have been tough when everything came to a halt.

Mizuguchi: The core concept of TRAVELER’S is “Live each day like a journey.” People often assume TRAVELER’S notebook is just for travel, but we want to inspire that same sense of excitement and curiosity in everyday life. When people couldn’t go anywhere during the pandemic, we encouraged them to embrace their TRAVELER’S notebook—to use it as a way to find joy in their daily lives, even when staying close to home.

– What kind of place is the Kyoto store?

Mizuguchi: We have many local customers, but we also see regular visitors who come from far away. For example, one customer stops by our Kyoto store every month on their way home from a business trip to Osaka. Even though we’re a retail shop, it means a lot to us that people see it as a place worth visiting.

Another key feature of our store is its spacious layout, allowing visitors to take their time and relax. We also have a library space where customers can sit on a sofa and freely browse books, creating an open and inviting atmosphere.

– I’ve heard that Kyoto-exclusive products are especially popular.

Mizuguchi: Yes! At the Kyoto store, we offer a special “KYOTO EDITION” collection, which includes store-exclusive TRAVELER’S notebooks, refills, and brass tags. These items feature Kyoto-inspired designs, such as gold-foil motifs and refills made with traditional washi paper, making them truly unique.

We also have collaborative items with Ace Hotel, such as notebooks and stickers. TRAVELER’S has a long-standing friendship with Ace Hotel, having held events at locations like New York, Los Angeles, and London.

Additionally, we offer unique in-store experiences that you can’t find anywhere else. These include customization stamps, a ticket scale, and a name engraving service. The stamp station, in particular, is extremely popular, with each TRAVELER’S store having its own exclusive designs. Many customers visit just to collect these stamps—including visitors from overseas. We aim to create a space where people can enjoy something beyond online shopping, offering experiences that make their visit special.

We also provide repair services, including rubber band replacements. One of our staff members even discovered a clever trick—twisting a single rubber band into a double loop—and it’s been gaining popularity. If you're interested, feel free to ask our staff!

A TRAVELER’S Notebook That Journeys with Me Every Day

Store manager Mizuguchi describes the charm of the TRAVELER’S notebook as "the way it takes on the personality of its owner." Over time, the leather cover develops unique creases and marks, gaining character with each use. The blank pages slowly fill with memories, thoughts, and sketches—reflecting the journey of the person who carries it. In that sense, life itself is a journey, and the TRAVELER’S notebook is there to grow alongside it.

– What do you think makes TRAVELER’S Notebook so beloved by people worldwide?

Mizuguchi: I think it’s because we pursue what we truly love. It’s not just about making notebooks—it’s about staying true to our passion, having a space to share it, and having a team that can communicate that passion to others.

Every TRAVELER’S notebook starts out the same blank notebook, but as people use them, they evolve into something entirely different. That’s what makes them so special—they adapt to the person using them. You can see this in how the leather ages or in the different inserts people choose to carry. This flexibility and personal touch are a big part of why so many people love them.

– How do you personally use your TRAVELER’S notebook?

Mizuguchi: I have several, but this particular cover has been with me since I joined the company—it’s been five years now. I don’t like to separate work from my personal life, so I keep multiple notebooks inside one cover.

One notebook is for recording memorable moments at work, like interactions with customers or things my staff have worked hard on. Another is a daily illustrated journal, where I document my day in sketches. For this, I use a 0.05mm pigment liner for fine details and a Tombow ABT pen to add watercolor-like shading. Drawing makes it easy to recall what happened on a particular day at a glance.

For me, my TRAVELER’S notebook is like a trusted companion—a space where I can express thoughts that might be hard to share with others. I’m not someone who travels frequently, but I love discovering new things in my daily life, and my notebook allows me to capture those little moments.

– Do you get to see how customers use their TRAVELER’S notebooks?

Mizuguchi: Absolutely! Everyone has their own unique way of using them. Some people use the zippered case insert as a wallet, keeping their cash inside. That often sparks fun conversations at the register!

One customer, who runs their own business, uses their notebook to jot down insights and reflect on their work, always thinking about ways to improve. When they show me their notes, I can see how passionate and positive they are about their job—it’s inspiring. Many customers are eager to share their notebooks with us, and I love seeing how each one tells a different story.

On the other hand, when I show my notebook to customers, they often ask, “What pen do you use?” Since we carry them in-store, I recommend them, and when customers decide to buy one, it makes me really happy. It’s such a natural and genuine way to connect—sharing something I love and seeing others resonate with it.

– Are there any special initiatives unique to the Kyoto store?

Mizuguchi: Since opening, TRAVELER’S FACTORY Kyoto has had more opportunities to connect with local Kyoto artisans. One notable collaboration was with the sock brand POP.POP.POP, which came about through an introduction by a customer. This partnership led to a Christmas season sales event and eventually to participation in the Kyoto flea market event, "Sakyo Wonderland".

Another collaboration was with Photolabo hibi, a film development studio in Okazaki. Initially, one of our staff members was a regular customer there, and this relationship evolved into a unique project. We created a film development ticket and camera film set, with printed photos sized to fit perfectly into a TRAVELER’S notebook.

These local collaborations wouldn't have happened without the connections fostered by our store. The store has become a hub for bringing people together and sparking creative projects.

– The collaboration with Ace Hotel is also quite memorable.

Mizuguchi: Yes! In addition to our co-branded products, we’ve also held events like the "Notebook Buffet." This event lets participants create their own custom Spiral Ring Notebooks, much like a lunch buffet where you pick and choose your favorites. We first hosted this during the Kyoto store’s grand opening, and it was a huge success. Since then, we've continued to host it at other locations as well on an irregular basis.

– Are there any exciting new projects coming up?

Mizuguchi: Every spring, we launch new products, and we’re currently preparing for that. But personally, rather than making drastic changes, I believe the most important thing is to stay committed to each customer, one interaction at a time.

Even during the pandemic, when visitors were scarce, we focused on engaging with each customer with care and sincerity. I truly believe that this dedication has led to where we are now, welcoming TRAVELER’S notebook fans from all over the world.

– It sounds like all of those moments are carefully recorded in your notebook.

Mizuguchi: Yes, absolutely. Every page holds those small, meaningful interactions. No matter how much our customer base grows, I want to keep that spirit alive. At the same time, I feel grateful that our partner stores around the world share this same love for TRAVELER’S notebook.

I hope to continue creating a store experience that makes visiting fans from across the globe feel truly welcomed.
